If you haven't been exercising though, then a slightly lower calorie diet is in order. Try starting at around 10 or 11 calories per pound of body weight.
At this point in your life you may not be quite as physically active overall either as you were when you were younger, so that will also factor into your total daily calorie burn.
Accounting For Nutritional Deficiencies
Another adjustment that you should make is accounting for nutritional deficiencies. Those who are older will want to really make sure that they are taking in enough B vitamins calcium, and iron.
This will help ensure that they maintain strong bones and high energy levels. In addition to that, make sure that you're taking in a very high quantity of fresh fruits and vegetables daily on whatever diet you choose as these will help to protect against some of the common diseases that can develop as the years go on.
Adding Extra Protein
Finally, the last thing that you should adjust on your diet protocol is your protein intake. Many older individuals are not getting enough protein, so it's important that you increase your intake.
Additionally, since you aren't quite as active as you were when you were younger, having more protein in the diet will help to further safeguard against lean muscle tissue loss, so will help to keep your metabolism higher long term.
Remember to add plenty of low fat dairy sources of protein in particular such as Greek yogurt, skim milk, and low-fat cottage cheese as these are both high in protein and high in calcium, so will really help you along your way.

Strength Training Works Your Body - Even When You Aren't!

Do you believe the title of this article sounds too good to be true? How can your body possibly work at burning fat and building muscle when you are at rest? Read on and I'll tell you!
I don't know about you, but when I was growing up it was all about aerobicizing! How many calories could we burn in an hour? I would jump and run and of course, follow along with the skinny girls doing their exercise shows on television (HATED THEM) and then worry about every little morsel of food for the rest of the day. I worked-out in fear because I didn't like the process and wasn't convinced that would ever change.
All of this began when I was about 10. Going through this "gawky" phase of my life, I became chubby and extremely uncomfortable with my appearance. The diet drinks were the new miracles in the supermarkets and skinny jeans made their debut. I couldn't dance my way around the living room often enough to look like the perfect women parading across the screen in the type of clothing that would make any one of us a diet-crazed junkie! Filled with constant disgust over my shape, I spent the next 20 years of my life feeling powerless over the body which housed my tortured spirit. Looking back on this now, I could consider those years a waste of time spent on self-loathing, however, since I don't dwell on spilled skim milk, I will instead view those years as precious learning tools for what I am about to share.
The truth is, we CAN create the body shape we desire. Will you look exactly like the goddess in the magazines? Maybe, maybe not. Thanks to airbrushing and photo shop, the model herself may not even have THAT body! The good news is you can absolutely sculpt your body to be the very best version of you. You can work hard, connect with the process AND have your body continue to work even when you aren't! I used to wish I had known this 30 years ago, but now I am grateful to have learned this my way on my terms. The fact that I was unaware and disconnected all of those years ago from what I now live by today makes this whole experience more meaningful!
Strength training is the act of using resistance to build muscle. Whether working with machines, dumbbells, bands/tubes or even your own body weight, this form of training involves specific attention toward sculpting your shape and increasing lean mass. There is no limit to the types of exercises that can be used as your imagination is limitless! Functionality, flexibility, increased metabolism and overall conditioning are just a few of the many benefits resulting from a resistance training program.
When we build muscle, we are increasing the amount of lean mass we have in our bodies. We have fat mass and lean mass. Fat mass is just that, fat. A pound of it takes up about as much space as a large grapefruit and requires little energy to survive burning about 2 calories a day. Not an ideal ROI. Lean mass is a combination of organs, water, bones and muscle tissue. Muscle is the only form of lean mass we really have any control over, so this is where we become accountable. One pound of this is very dense and about the size of a baseball burning around 50 calories a day. This teaches your body to work smarter as opposed to harder.
When in the midst of a strength training program, your brain is the one in command. It lets the nervous system in on it's intentions and then those messages are passed on to the appropriate body parts to comply with. As we do a bicep curl we are sending the message to these muscles to do as we wish and recruit whatever is necessary to get the job done. Once the set has been accomplished, there is still more work to be done. The good news is...YOU ARE NO LONGER DOING THE WORK! For up to 48 hours following strength training, your body has to go through a recovery phase where it suffers stress from the demands placed from the exercises. During this process, new fibers are created and added to the existing muscle to increase size and density. This all happens while we're at rest.
Let's think about it this way. In a construction site, the general contractor (your brain) is the one in charge. He/she has a blueprint of what needs to be done and specific instructions to complete the tasks. The project manager (neuromuscular system) is there to ensure the orders from the contractor are understood and applied while overseeing each project. The construction workers (your muscles) work to build and construct what has been asked of them. If the crew is short on staff, project manager consults with contractor and they hire more workers to get the job done. Once the day of work has been completed, we know that glue and paint must dry, concrete will harden up (recovery process) and this happens in its own time in between hours of labor. Building muscle works very much the same way!
As you work-out, your brain commands your nervous system to deliver and oversee messages to your muscles. Once completed, all fibers and tissues need time to weaken and reform to become bigger, stronger and capable of handling more responsibility. In the same way that construction workers cannot force paint to dry, we cannot force muscles to recover any faster than they do on their own. While all of this energy is being expended to help produce more musculature, I'll remind you that each pound of muscle gained burns 50 calories at rest. Ten pounds of muscle gained = 500 calories a day at rest which means you could burn an extra 3500 calories a week when not even working-out. That's a POUND A WEEK!
So now not only are you using energy in the recovery process, but now you are burning extra calories every day due to work you have already done! Does this inspire you? Does it make you want to pick up some weights and get moving? If the idea of burning calories while clicking the remote, talking on the phone or even sleeping doesn't motivate you to begin a strength training program, I honestly don't know what will!
Don't get me wrong. Cardiovascular training is important and very beneficial. It should be included in any wellness program and teaches your heart to work more efficiently, keeping it strong and healthy. If, however, you are looking to lose fat and work smart while becoming strong, lean and shapely then consider adding strength training to your routine.
I will leave you with this image. Imagine having spent some time in your day connecting to the very muscles you worked. You thought about firming up your quads with every squat, strengthening your weak back each time you performed a bent-over row and filling in those "wings" under your arms with tricep muscles. Every repetition works in your favor creating a reality of the vision you had for your body. Wouldn't it be nice to know that after all of that, the work continues on while you get to rest?

Recovering From Addiction - Some Rehabs May Contribute to High Relapse Rates

Blaming high relapse rates on rehabs sounds much like any addict's excuse and need to push the blame for failure on someone else -- and who better than the actual facility designed to treat that addict. So when the addict goes through treatment and relapses it must be that there was some flaw in the treatment program, right? Well in some cases actually, I believe the answer really is a slid "Yes". Here is why:
Every rehab for drug and alcohol abuse problems in the country -- and if not the rehab itself but the AA meetings you attend while in rehab -- will at some point relay the specific relapse statistics. Generally a counselor or the AA members will tell you that 9 out of 10 people you are going through a 30, 60, or 90 day program with will relapse.
That is an accepted figure in the industry -- that you are going to see about a 90% lapse rate for people going through initial or early treatment. Generally the reason for this is that most people take the hardest step of all to get to rehab --they admit they have some type of substance problem ranging from alcohol to prescription pills to hard core illegal drugs that has gotten out of control. In AA or 12 step programs the notion is "life became unmanageable and I came to realize I needed help". Accepting the fact that you needed help in the first place is a gigantic step in the right direction.All counselors and seasoned AA fellows will congratulate a newcomer for arriving at that decision, and rightfully so.
The problem arises in that 90% relapse number, and that figure really applies to those people who get admitted for treatment, serve their time, so to speak, and then leave a program feeling like they have done the work to get better, and whenever the program for them ends, they believe they are "good to go", and this is where I feel some blame falls on the rehab facilities' shoulders.
Many of them give you a medallion or a certificate or some other symbol that "you've made it" or "graduated" by successfully making it through the prescribed program. The fact is, one learns alot in treatment, and almost always gains "tools" to deal with his or her problem. The longer you stay in treatment, the more you may be able to fill your tool bag -- but there is a big problem with this.
You are let go back out into the world where there's a liquor store and a drug dealer on any corner, and you have not had any time to actually test your tools to make sure they work, much less know if you have all the tools you need, and it's true that because of this relapse rates are unacceptably high.
A subject that often arises in treatment is that of sober living. Sober living allows for a newly sober person to live in houses that have at least some nominal structure and differing requirements, but all have one basic tenet that's the same and that everybody must live by -- they must stay sober and they are tested frequently to make sure that's the case. Sober living allows somebody to experience life's stressors outside of treatment, but to ideally live in a house where everyone is experiencing similar issues and can provide support for one another.This is naturally a much "safer" environment than that which one would face at home, and a better platform from which to experiment with one's tools.
The success rates are much, much, higher for sober living residents in terms of NOT relapsing. The longer they can do sober living, ranging from a minimum of three months to a year, the higher their success rates get for NOT relapsing. I experienced this firsthand where after my first rehab I bolted home feeling great about myself, but three months later began slipping right back into old habits. It took another 10 years to get back to treatment. The 2nd time, after my habits had gotten much worse, I realized I had to do something different and my family -- not the treatment center -- insisted that I do sober living, so I did.
After 6 months in sober living, I began to change and after using the tools I had learned, I began to truly realize life could be fun and great and everything I wanted without drugs and alcohol -- but it took 6 months of sober living, and at that point I realized how valuable it was and decided I could use more of it and help others at the same time, so I opened a few houses and lived on one of the properties. 6 years later, I can honestly tell you it was sober living that unlocked true sobriety for me -- and the treatment centers know this is the case.
I think those centers that give you the graduation parties or symbolic congratulatory gifts contribute to relapse by enabling anybody to think they have gained enough just by treatment to "make it". There should be a much stronger "push" for sober living where they are honest with people and prepare them as early as in the intake process that to go to sober living is critical to truly complete treatment if they want the odds for staying sober to be in their favor.
So the title of this article stands if you believe that the idea of "graduating" should be abolished in favor of mandating sober living as a part of anyone's overall treatment program. Rather, it is presented sometime during one's treatment program as sort of an "add-on" thing that would be advised. But no strong emphasis and weight to the degree sober living MUST be part of one's program is promoted strongly enough. After the patient is feeling better on his or her 10th day or whenever this "add-on" idea is presented, it's too late. The patient already has focused his or her sights on an exit date -- and they are generally not going to be receptive to the idea.
It's a shame, and the whole point of insisting that at rehabs some of the blame for high relapse rates is theirs is simply to suggest the treatment facility must change with regards to how sober living and halfway housing is presented and emphasized -- moreso at some drug and alcohol treatment programs than others -- but it must change.

They are then absorbed into the blood and being circulated throughout the body, getting further converted and then delivered to respective cells which utilize them as energy. This is referred to as metabolism, a process of chemical breakdown and conversion of food to energy.

Depression - How It Works and How to Prevent It

Have you ever been depressed? It's no fun. When you are depressed, you become very negative. You have no energy and no confidence. There is no peace of mind and no hope. You are in a very dark place. Does this sound familiar?
Life is very painful when you are in this state. You lose your ability to find solutions and become very ineffective. Fortunately, there is something you can do about it. You can be free of depression and you can get your life back.
Depression may seem to be caused by your circumstances, but it's not. It is the result of how you relate to your circumstances. There may also be chemical aspects of depression, but for now, we are just going to talk about the mental aspects.
Here is how it works: Something happens that strikes a nerve. We lose a relationship, a job, or some other major event takes place. These circumstances trigger a childhood hurt of feeling worthless, not good enough, not worth loving, failure, or some other form of feeling "not okay."
It's not the truth that we are this way, it's just a suppressed emotion, but it's an emotion that we will do almost anything to avoid feeling. Usually, we are able to push this emotion back down, but sometimes the circumstances are so overwhelming, we can't.
These circumstances are subconsciously perceived as a major threat to our survival. In an automatic attempt to avoid this threat, we act in a way that creates depression.
How we create depression
• We withdraw from life.
• We become "at the effect" of our circumstances.
• We stop moving forward.
We withdraw
When you are active in life, you tend to be happy. You have momentum and the energy to make things happen. You are also in a place where solutions and opportunity show up.
When you withdraw, you shut this down. You close down and stop taking action. Your energy drops and your negativity grows. You stop getting new thoughts and life doesn't work as well.
We become "at the effect"
At any moment, the circumstances of your life are exactly the way that they are. This is true whether you like it or not. When you are at peace with the truth of the way your situation is, you can focus on what needs to be done based on the facts. When you do this, life works.
Now look at any area of your life that isn't working and notice the direction of your focus. Instead of looking to see what needs to be done based on the truth of the way your situation is, your focus is on fighting the truth of the way your situation is.
When you do this, you give all your power to your circumstances. You make yourself a victim and put yourself "at the effect". Instead of being on top of your situation, your situation is now on top of you.
Instantly, your confidence and energy disappear. You lose your ability to find solutions and you tend to make your situation worse. Whenever you are depressed, you are deep at the effect.
We stop moving forward
Imagine being in the deep part of a lake. As long as you are swimming, you stay above water. As soon as you stop swimming, you start to sink. The same thing is true about life. As long as you are moving forward, you stay on top of life. As soon as you stop moving forward, you start to sink.
Depression is created by the combination of withdrawing, being at the effect, and not moving forward.
To be free of depression, take the following steps:
• Find and heal the suppressed hurt that creates and fuels the depression.
• Get active. This is the opposite of withdrawing. Find things that you enjoy doing and do them as often as possible. Get out in the world. Be with people and have fun. Exercise.
• Find the specific aspects of your life that you are resisting. Surrender to the truth of the way your situation is. Then see what needs to be done based on this truth and start taking action.
• Get clear on what you want in life and start taking steps to have your dreams come true. The steps can be small ones at first. That's okay. Just make sure you are moving forward.
You can be free of depression. Problem areas can clear up and you can create an incredible life, but you need to know how and you need to take the steps.

The Latest News About Depression: Could Your Brain Have a Natural Opiate Deficiency?

If absolutely nothing has been able to break your cycle of depression, and you are frustrated to the point where you don't know how you can live without getting better soon, there is an alternate theory about your problem you need to learn more about.
I have spent thousands of hours doing general research on moods and the human brain because I am completely fascinated by the subject. I recently discovered something that continues to blow me away when I think about it. Being a victim myself of bipolar depression, terrible anxiety disorders and ADHD, I know what it is like trying to escape the indescribable negative feelings and overwhelming heaviness and terror these disorders create in the mind.
What follows will probably stun you if you have never heard it before, but I think it also proves that drinking and/or drug use and mood disorders --especially depression -- are linked by a natural cause. Here is what I find incredible and am surprised is not that well known or publicized:
It was recently discovered that the human brain and body manufactures morphine in the identical molecular structure as that which comes from the opium poppy. Here is the clearest proof, published in a report just 2 years ago by the Neuroscience Research Institute: "Recent empirical findings have contributed valuable mechanistic information in support of a regulated de novo biosynthetic pathway for chemically authentic morphine and related morphinan alkaloids within (human) animal cells".
The opium poppy, of course, is what the devil's drug heroin is made from. Not coincidentally, I believe that is why it is the most addictive drug on earth. It makes one feel so euphorically happy when they first start taking it, that the desire to feel that way all the time gets embedded in the brain. It is really important that you understand that your brain does not manufacture a chemical that makes you feel like you have taken an opiate -- it manufactures the exact opiate itself.
We know for certain that what the brain manufactures in terms of neurotransmitters or other "feel good" brain chemicals, it unfortunately does not manufacture enough of in people who are clinically depressed. You have undoubtedly heard examples of these other "feel-good" neuro-chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin or endorphins. Too little of these chemicals results in depression, and antidepressants help correct the problem.
Doctors don't know exactly how most of these drugs work, mind you, and some were meant for totally different problems -- but we'll save that for another article. The main point I am driving at is that if some people can be deficient in other brain chemicals, it certainly stands to reason that they could be deficient in their opiate levels. From what I have researched this is being referred to as either Endorphin Deficiency Syndrome, or Endogenous Opioid Deficiency. Not having enough opiates is a subject I have direct experience with and can describe for you, as a bad back got me into opiate-based painkillers and I got addicted to them.
Because you develop a tolerance an opiate drug, you need more and more and more of it over time -- just to feel "normal" after taking the drug for several months. Without it, after taking higher amounts for a while, you go into opiate withdrawal. I don't think there is anything more uncomfortable and frightening than this kind of withdrawal, either. Your body feels like it has the flu times 100, and your mind goes into a state of a tortured paralysis. Doing anything effectively while in such a state is nearly impossible, and your brain is stuck on one thought and one thought only -- how to get more opiates.
One reason people go to rehab is to get some medical relief from such sickness by way of other drugs the doctors can give you to keep you a little more comfortable. You need mental support as well, because your brain function is totally impaired. Depression is also inevitable, and that leads us back to the point of this article.
There are growing numbers of what they call "treatment resistant" people who have got depression. The thinking is that some people are driven into depression by the lack of the naturally made opiate. Every one of the people in this group whose web comments I read experienced what they called an incredibly pronounced and dramatic lift in their mood upon taking an opiate. They are completely convinced it is the only thing that will help beating depression. After trying everything else, they get stuck in a position where they know they need an opiate, but feel very guilty about it because of the attached negative stigmas to the drug.
Fortunately, a drug has been developed that is used for easing people off of opiate addictions and it is called Suboxone. It is made in doses of 1 MG pills, where up to 18 MG might be prescribed for a heavy addict in withdrawal. But I have heard of people going on Suboxone for the long term with very good effects at just 2 MG. It is addicting, but people experienced with opiates say if you run out of your Suboxone you may feel a little achy for a few days at the 2 MG level, that's all. I should mention that obviously Suboxone itself is a type of substitute opiate to help addicts, and giving it to people long term where technically they could become slightly addicted is highly controversial in the medical community. Some docs frown upon this whole notion, while others know it's a life-saver. I am not a doctor, so you need to speak with a progressive psychiatrist about everything I have mentioned here.
Hopefully this knowledge can make a difference in somebody's life, and help bring happiness to those stuck in the awful grip of depression-- if they are truly treatment resistant. How about you?
